Pretty Awesome—- GEORGE R.R. MARTIN graces us with his presence today.  Check out his post about The Skin Trade on his very own blog. When I first optioned the story for www.mtpprods.com, I was drawn to it on several levels and, as we continue to develop the project, we are full-on living, breathing these characters and the universe in which they exist.

It’s unarguable, GRRM is well deserving of his recent accolades, which have been a long time coming— one of Time Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential People, USA Today’s Author of the Year, and New York Times Bestseller, with much thanks HBO’s production of George’s ‘Game of Thrones’.   As an auteur, his work is being enjoyed en masse- he’s becoming a brand of sorts- and it’s this fervor that surrounds his work as of late, that makes the project that much more exciting.  We loved him and his work well before GoT—but now, it’s as if this project can be rightly celebrated by so many who recognize his genius, that may have overlooked the project otherwise before.
‘nuff said— bottom line— Get ready for a twist-and-turn murder mystery like no other you’ve ever seen before— and much thanks to George R.R. Martin, Vince Gerardis, Ryan Colucci, Beth Newbauer and Stacey Parks of www.filmspecific.com for being an integral part of it all.

SIGNS OF LIFE IN THE HYPERION GALAXY

Holt McCallany in sci-fi movie White Space. Visit the official site at www.enterwhitespace.com

I’m not sure how many remember the 2001 Anthrax Attacks- when everyone was scared to open their mail because you didn’t know if it was a care package from Grandma or just a healthy dose of Bacillus Anthracis waiting to snuff you out; but this is kind of how I felt when producing partner Ryan Colucci sent me the latest cut of White Space.

The one thing we (WS producers) all know- is that we have a high-margin product on our hand.  If we learned one thing from AFM it’s that there’s an insatiable industry appetite for Disaster Films, Thinking-person’s horror and Effects Driven Sci-Fi films like White Space.  So profit margin is there- pretty much built in from the get, thanks to some hard work from a talented crew and a win-win deal with our VFX masterminds, www.filmworksfx.com.

However, from a creative standpoint, after viewing the first rough cut, I can’t say I was doing cartwheels.  The screenplay - written by Clay McLeod Chapman and Ryan Colucci- is top-notch, solid - and I wanted so very much for our final product to be as loyal to the page as possible.  This wasn’t exactly the case.  Again, from a product standpoint— great- check, please.  But creatively- I knew we had a much better film on our hands and thankfully, Colucci- was straight up, Judd Nelson, Relentless, in tracking down the man with a plan— Eric Potter-  an immensely talented editor with a VFX background.  His credits speak for themselves with work on movies like Underworld: Rise of the Lycans and The Lincoln Lawyer, starring Matthew McConaughey, to name a few.

His name may as well be HARRY Potter because he turned out sheer magic in comparison to the initial cut I reviewed.  I made notes on the cut last night from around 11pm to 3am and the only thing missing was the popcorn.

This is the movie we set out to make. It’s a Monster. Brooding and mysterious with thrills and jumps along the way through to an exciting conclusion with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a sci-fi thriller about a deep space crew gone mad as they get in over their heads on the chase for a black market take, disturbing a legendary beast that will do anything to protect its territory.

‘White Space’ star, Holt McCallany, among the Updated List of Potential ‘Riddick’ Cast; Third Installment of David Twoy’s popular ‘Pitch Black’ franchise

copy below from Bloody Disgusting—- Monday, November 28, 2011

By: MrDisgusting
While production picks back up in Montreal, Bloody Disgusting has been digging for the full cast of David Twohy’s Riddick, the third film in the trilogy that will star Vin Diesel and Karl Urban.

We have exclusively reported Oct. 31 that Andreas Apergis, Katee Sackhoff (White Noise 2: The Light, Growl, The Haunting in Georgia), Bokeem Woodbine (Total Recall, Devil) and WWE wrestler Dave Bautista (The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption) have all been given offers. Add Matthew Nable (K-11, Killer Elite) to the list as “Boss Johns”. Apergis would play “Krone”, commander of the dark theocracy. Sackhoff would pay “Dahl”, a Nordic merc tracking Riddick.

We’ve also learned that there’s strong interest in both Cliff Curtis (Live Free or Die Hard , The Fountain, Training Day) and Holt McCallany (Alien 3, Fight Club) as “Santana” and “Vargas”, respectively.

Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick (Diesel) fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before. Soon bounty hunters from throughout the galaxy descend on Riddick only to find themselves pawns in his greater scheme for revenge. With his enemies right where he wants them, Riddick unleashes a vicious attack of vengeance before returning to his home planet of Furya to save it from destruction.

HBO Exec: ‘Game of Thrones’ Will Go on as Long as George R.R. Martin Keeps Writing

BEVERLY HILLS – HBO executives stressed their commitment to making Game of Thrones authentic to George R.R. Martin’s books and to keeping the show going as long as Martin keeps writing — which is a considerable commitment given Martin’s prolific nature.

Addressing critics at the semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour,Richard Plepler, co-president of HBO, said Martin is happy with the networks adaptation of his work.

“The truth is when you see how thrilled he is with the production, we know we’ve succeeded partially by his satisfaction,” said Plepler. “We told George we’d go as long as he kept writing.”

Michael Lombardo, president of programming at HBO, admitted that he has not read Martin’s books. But he noted that Thrones writers/producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss are among Martin’s “biggest fans.”

But while HBO has had much success with dramas post-Sopranos, the same cannot be said for half-hour series. With Entourage closing in on its final episode and still no true heir apparent — from a ratings perspective — to the long-wrapped Sex and the City, HBO executives acknowledge that the half hour genre has been a challenge.

“I feel like in the hour area we have some strength,” said Lombardo. “In the half hour area we’d like to see some of those shows pop out a little bit more.”

Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm is having its most-watched season in several years, but its audience is still less than three million per episode. And few of the network’s other half-hour shows — Bored to DeathEastbound and Down — have truly broken out.

Plepler and Lombardo expressed disappointment in the combining of the made-for-TV-movie and miniseries categories beginning with this year’s Emmy Awards. The premium cable network has dominated both categories, especially miniseries as fewer networks devote resources to the big-budget projects.

“They are two distinct genres,” said Lombardo. “They have separate categories for different kinds of reality shows and yet there is a combined [category] for movies and miniseries. But we weren’t involved in those conversations. There’s nothing we can do about it.”

HBO has three projects nominated in the category this year: the movies Too Big to Fail andCinema Verite and the miniseries Mildred Pierce.

“It’s disappointing to us because it prevents some of the writers and producers and directors from being recognized,” added Plepler. “But there’s nothing we can do about it. We just have to live with it.”

They also used part of their time here to talk up HBO Go. The network’s authenticated streaming service is available via most major cable providers – but not Time Warner Cable, the nation’s second-largest provider behind Comcast.

“We wish we had the leverage and the power to move Time Warner Cable, but as you know we have nothing to do with them,” said Plepler.

Time Warner, which owns HBO, spun off Time Warner Cable in early 2009.

Plepler added that the company is in active negotiations with TWC.

“We’re negotiating the deal and I don’t think there’s any question that consumers are unhappy that they can’t get HBO Go,” he added. “We’re working as fast as we can to close the deal.”

The TV Everywhere initiative is a lynchpin in HBO’s programming model, which does not rely on advertising. And Plelper acknowledged that major service providers and ad-supported networks are navigating the digital universe with a different set of priorities.

“They’re selling eyeballs to advertisers and we’re selling a brand,” he said.

About half of HBO’s audience comes from on-demand platforms and mobile-broadband, according to Plepler.

“We’re not determining success on the basis of numbers,” said Plepler. “If a show like Tremedraws a smaller number as part of the canvas we’re painting on that’s okay.”

Asked why the network touts its live premiere ratings much like broadcast and ad-supported networks, Lombardo told reporters gathered here: “Only because you write about it.”

Mike the Pike Productions, Inc. Begins Development on ‘The Skin Trade’;

re-ups Rights to Werewolf Masterpiece by Game of Thrones Scribe, George R.R. Martin

LOS ANGELES, CA –July 20, 2011- Mike the Pike Productions, Inc. (OTC: MIKP) (www.mtpprods.com) is pleased to announce that it has re-upped its option for ‘The Skin Trade’ by George R.R. Martin, the author/creator behind HBO’s smash success, ‘Game of Thrones’.

‘GRRM’s ‘The Skin Trade’ is a werewolf novella with a macabre backdrop in the vein of films like ‘’Underworld’, ‘The Howling’ and even ‘Silence of the Lambs’, to enable a high priority development phase for the project toward production in 2012. The Option gives Mike The Pike Productions exclusive film rights to develop the material for screen, intended for wide theatrical release. These actions will be coupled with its agenda to begin pre-production on a separate, low-budget feature by end of 2011.

Producers are confident the piece will have both critical and commercial appeal with a box-office scenario that could well outperform its (even recent) Lycan counterparts.

MTP and its partners recently wrapped principle photography on sci-fi thriller ‘White Sapce’ written by Spoke Lane Entertainment’s ‘Ryan Colucci’ and Directed by www.filmworksfx.com founder, Ken Locsmandi.

Mike The Pike Productions CEO/Producer, Mark B. Newbauer says, “The Skin Trade”  is both a new spin on the werewolf legend and a classic, macabre mystery; shrouded in dark secrets, on the chase for a shifty killer with a thirst for the most unlikely of victims. George has once again created, in a matter of pages, a rich universe with complex characters and a jaw-dropping storyline that sticks with you well beyond the read.”

He continues, “George is a great writer because George is a feeling human being with, from what I can tell, as much compassion and understanding of human nature as he has imagination and attention to detail.  Where most great writers are creating great stories, George creates, time and time again, entire worlds, in which every character, every moment is real, even in the most bizzare of scenarios or settings.  It’s why this piece, above any other I’ve read or seen is, hands down, the best werewolf story there is.”

The team looks to connect with George at this week’s Comic-Con 2011 in San Diego, the largest comic book and popular arts convention in the world, where producer Ryan Colucci will be marketing his www.harbor-moon.com as well as teaser material for the MIKP’s SPOKEFISH Graphic Novel slate. George will be moderating a panel for Game of Thrones (http://tinyurl.com/3k2u2x5).

George R.R. Martin, coined ‘The American Tolkein’ and recently named by Time Magazine as one of the top 100 Most Influential People is the author/creator behind HBO’s  successful epic series, Game of Thrones, which is nominated for 13 Emmys last week, including Outstanding Drama and Outstanding Writing.

Currently, Avatar Press (http://www.avatarpress.com/) is developing the Graphic Novel version of ‘The Skin Trade’.

More news to come on ‘White Space’, ‘The Skin Trade’ and another exciting property yet to be announced!

MTP Producers Ryan Colucci, Beth Newbauer and Mark B. Newbauer present: George R.R. Martin’s THE SKIN TRADE: From the best-selling author behind HBO’s Game of Thrones comes this white knuckle chiller with a string of unsolved murders immersed deep in lycan lore : When a series of grotesque killings strikes her small hometown, private detective Randi Wade becomes suspicious. The grisly murders remind her all too much of her own father’s death nearly 20 years ago. Now there is a killer in town who not only slays his victims, but also takes their skin. Undaunted, Randi takes the case head-on as the murders continue, each more brutal than the last. When a close friend suddenly becomes a target, he is forced to reveal a startling secret about himself and Randi is quickly pulled into a dark world within her own town where monsters do exist and even they have something to fear…
